The most dangerous cities in the world: A look at the risks

Nicholas Angelucci

Safety is usually one of the highest-ranking concerns among travelers. While there are cities that boast culture, breathtaking scenery, and mouth-watering delicacies, there are cities that are plagued by rampant crime, political turmoil, and civil unrest. In our blog, we shall take a trip through three of the most dangerous cities of the world and point out items that have contributed to the development of their dangerous reputations.

1. Tijuana, Mexico

Tijuana, although only a city placed south of the U.S. border, has conventionally been known for its pulsating nightlife and rich cultural attractions. Additionally, due to their main causes of drug trafficking and gang violence, the city also happens to be among those with one of the highest crime rates in the world. Such adversities related to organized crimes have placed the city in the midst of violent confrontations between various rival gangs, leading to a large number of homicides. While Tijuana has cleaned up its act and worked to make it safer for tourism, it is still a place where visitors should be cautious and careful in certain neighborhoods.

2. Caracas, Venezuela

Caracas has faced myriad crises, including political turmoil, economic instability, and high-rising crime rates. Property and violent crimes-like robbery and kidnappings-are common; it has one of the highest murder rates in the world, moved by widespread unemployment and abject poverty. The Caracas will be quite intimidating to its travelers. With its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, the unrest and insecurity at the moment dictate that any visiting is well-informed and does whatever precautions necessary while trying to navigate this city.

3. St. Louis, Missouri, USA

St. Louis is most often the dark horse on the lists of dangerous cities, as it has quite a reputation, especially for high crime rates. Its rich history and well-developed arts scene are attractive to visitors, but over time, gun violence and property crime have become major issues. There are a great many factors contributing to the crime rate, including socioeconomic challenges and systemic issues. With awareness of surroundings and keeping clear of certain areas, particularly at night, travelers may find themselves being better off.

These cities may therefore have a covering of aesthetic beauty and culture, but indeed carry with them quite substantial risks. Individuals undertaking trips to such places should do so with much caution, keeping themselves updated on the currently prevailing conditions and assuming personal responsibility for their own security. All in all, awareness and preparation can make travel far more enjoyable and secure, no matter where your travels take you.
